NIHR Academic Training Programme

At Hull York Medical School, we are committed to supporting doctors to develop their academic skills, as part of their career pathway towards becoming senior academic clinicians and leading research that makes a real and lasting difference to people’s lives.

We are pleased to offer opportunities to train within the NIHR Integrated Clinical Academic Training Programme, implemented locally through our partnership with local NHS trusts and Health Education England Yorkshire.

This programme offers healthcare professionals the opportunity to develop skills for a career that combines clinical research and leadership, whilst continuing with their clinical practice and clinical development.

We support three opportunities through the NIHR Integrated Clinical Academic Training Programme:

Specialist Foundation Programme

The Specialist Foundation Programme (SFP) gives foundation doctors the opportunity to develop research, teaching and leadership/management skills. Foundation doctors following an SFP have dedicated time set aside for academic activities, the nature of which will depend on the SFP.

During Academic FY, doctors are expected to study the PGCert Health Research and Statistics at the University of York in order to gain a solid grounding in the quantitative methods used in health, medical and social sciences research.

Those on a medical education track would be expected to study the PGCert in Health Professions Education at Hull York Medical School in order to gain the skills and knowledge to deliver exceptional teaching, assessment, course design and educational research.

Academic posts are in specialties including cardiology, respiratory medicine, oncology, medical education, surgery, psychiatry, general practice, and palliative medicine. Trainees spend four months in an academic specialty placement in FY2.

Academic Clinical Fellowship

NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowships (ACFs) allow medical trainees to undertake 25% research and 75% clinical training over 3 years (4 years for general practice) and are aimed at those who, at the early stages of their specialty training, show outstanding potential for a career in academic medicine.

During the post, alongside clinical training, ACFs will be able to develop their academic skills and are supported to prepare an application for a Research Training Fellowship or a place on an educational programme (leading to a higher degree).

Academic posts locally are in a range of specialties including cardiology, respiratory medicine, oncology, adult and child and adolescent psychiatry, surgery, palliative medicine, renal medicine, anaesthetics, infectious diseases, medical microbiology and general practice.

The training is delivered through one or more of our flexible postgraduate degree programmes, tailoring a suite of modules that are suitable to your research and career aspirations.

We also offer bespoke training options that are designed and delivered by Hull York Medical School's Academic Training Programme team.

We offer a stimulating and supportive learning and research environment. As well as having one or more dedicated research supervisors, you will also be supported throughout your research and your career by an Academic Programme Lead at Hull York Medical School.
