Funding for intercalated degrees

There are a number of funding opportunities to help with costs and support you to intercalate during your Medicine degree.

Students wishing to intercalate are also able to apply for financial support via the appropriate undergraduate or postgraduate finance body, depending on your programme of choice.

For students wishing to pursue a Masters level programme, you will need to complete at least three years of your medical programme (if your first degree) to undertake a postgraduate level intercalation. You should be mindful that completing a postgraduate intercalation can make you ineligible for further funding from undergraduate loans funders as you will hold a higher level qualification.

Intercalation can contribute to your eligibility for the NHS Bursary. Students become eligible for the NHS Bursary after the completion of four years of eligible study. Intercalating for a Bachelors or Masters level intercalated degree also contributes to eligibility for the NHS Bursary. This typically means that students become eligible for NHS Bursary support from their fifth year of study (ie. year 4 of your MB BS or a Gateway year plus 3 years of MB BS). The NHS Bursary may also be used to support an intercalated degree if you have completed 4 years of a medical programme.

The application process typically opens early March, and applications are made directly to the NHS Business Services Authority via their application portal.

The deadline for applying for the bursary is typically in May of the preceding academic year. Submissions after the deadline may result in a delay of any funding.
