Hull York Medical School will train even more clinical academic leaders of the future thanks to its success in the latest National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Integrated Academic Training (IAT) Programme bid.

The School has been awarded a total of 17 Academic Clinical Fellowships (ACFs) and 6 Clinical Lecturer (CL) posts for 2026 and 2027 – a significant increase from the previous bid in 2023 (10 ACFs and 4 CLs).  These posts are fully funded and reflect the School’s growing reputation for excellence in clinical academic training.

The NIHR Integrated Academic Training Programme supports the training of doctors and dentists in England to develop their clinical academic careers – enabling them to combine clinical practice with academic research at each stage of their speciality clinical training.

Professor Bob Phillips, Consultant in Paediatric Oncology and Director of the School’s IAT Programme says: ‘This success is testament to the strength of our research environment and the dedication of our teams across the Medical School and our NHS partners. We’re proud to offer a supportive and include training pathway that enables clinical academics to thrive and undertake research which will tackle some of the major health challenges of today.’

The NIHR highlighted the School’s commitment to addressing health inequalities and its ability to support trainees across a wide range of specialities as the reasons for its successful bid.
