Develop your teaching, assessment and feedback practice in anatomy education to the standard of Advance HE Fellow in our unique Professional Practice in Anatomy Education module.
This module facilitates your development as an anatomy educator by introducing different pedagogic approaches, assessment methods that are unique to anatomy and concepts relating to legislation, storage and preparation of donor material, as well as the historical, social and ethical context of its study.
You will be guided to develop your teaching practice and to engage with and provide evidence for all dimensions of the Professional Standards Framework 2023.
Develop your teaching practice through opportunities to teach anatomy education across a diverse portfolio of programmes for Hull York Medical School and parent universities’ programmes, including Medicine, Sport Rehabilitation, Physiotherapy, Paramedic Science, Biomedicine, Forensic Science, and Diagnostic Radiography.
Uniquely, this module is accredited by Advance HE, and successful completion will entitle participants to professional recognition as an Advance HE Fellow. This accreditation is recognised internationally as evidence of your commitment to developing your academic practice.
You will receive 20 Level 7 credits on completing this short course, including passing the assessments.

Who is this short course for?
This course is ideal for those with existing experience of anatomy education who wish to develop their practice and develop their careers in anatomy or medical education and achieve formal recognition of their expertise. Our Fellows have gone on to roles including anatomy demonstrator, lecturer, clinical specialist training, anatomy and education research.
Eligible applicants may take this course as a standalone CPD option or as part of the PGCert/PGDip/MSc in Clinical Anatomy and Education or PGCert/PGDip/MSc in Clinical Anatomy.
Teaching and assessment
What you will learn
You will be introduced to a range of subject specific pedagogic approaches and to explore the evidence base around their use in the legal, ethical and social context of working with human tissue. Participants are supported to develop to the level of Advance HE Fellow in the context of anatomy education.

- Supporting learners in anatomy
- Engaging with development opportunities to enhance your practice
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Discuss and critically appraise the key features of different approaches to teaching anatomy, with particular emphasis on dissection and prosection.
- Discuss and appraise the key features of different approaches to teaching anatomy, critically reviewing and integrating theories of the scholarship of teaching and learning into their own teaching practices.
- Discuss and critically appraise the different types of assessment used within anatomy education. Demonstrate different approaches to assess and give feedback for learning.
- Recognise the legal and social requirements when working with human tissue, and describe the historical, social and ethical context of the study of human anatomy using body donors. Apply this knowledge to support students working with body donors and reflect on the emotional and learning support needs of students working within the field of anatomy.
- Critically review and reflect on the alignment of teaching method, level of learning and intended/ unintended learning outcomes. Critically review and reflect on their own teaching practices, competencies and knowledge in relation to UK HE anatomy teaching. Identify areas for enhancement and improvement informed through scholarship and the critical evaluation of the practice of others.
- Demonstrate differences in learning approaches and incorporate the needs of diverse groups of learners into anatomy teaching planning and delivery, including the use of appropriate learning technologies.
How is this short course delivered?
The course is delivered through a series of interactive workshops on three study days. These are ideally attended in person in Hull, but arrangements to attend remotely can be made if necessary.
If required, participants are supported to take on a range of teaching sessions. At least two teaching sessions will be formally observed by a tutor.
Time commitment
As a 20 credit level 7 module, the total time commitment, including contact time and self-directed learning, is 200 hours. Across the module, this is approximately 16 hours per week, including timetabled sessions.
This time allocation should include a minimum of 80 hours of teaching practice, including planning, preparation and assessment.
Assessment
The course is assessed through a portfolio, which will include an account of your teaching philosophy and how this has developed, case studies evidencing your practice and appendices of formal observations, session plans and a record of evidence of your teaching activity.
Applying
Entry requirements
An undergraduate (strong 2.2 or above) or postgraduate degree in a relevant subject containing significant anatomy, such as:
- Anatomy, Medicine, Medical Engineering, Physician Associate Studies, Veterinary Medicine
- Biological or Biomedical Science and related programmes (Zoology, Bioengineering), with significant evidence of anatomy study (curricular or extra-curricular)
Applicants are encouraged to highlight previous anatomical experience in the application.
Participants must meet several prerequisites to enrol on this course:
- Existing Associate Fellow accreditation
- Evidence of extensive experience of teaching anatomy in Higher Education, for example, as an anatomy demonstrator, tutor or lecturer
Both prerequisites can also be met through completion of the PGCert in Clinical Anatomy and Education.
Hull York Medical School or University of Hull postgraduate research programme graduates may also meet these prerequisites by completing the Professional Practice in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education module and significant anatomy teaching experience.
