Dr Gillian Jackson

BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD

Research Fellow in Palliative Care

Role at Hull York Medical School

Gillian is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Palliative Care at Hull York Medical School. Her research interests focus on improving equity in access to and quality of palliative care, cancer care, and the detection, assessment, management, and prevention of delirium. She specialises in mixed methods research, with expertise in the evaluation of complex interventions in real-world healthcare settings. She is currently a co-applicant and Research Fellow lead on the DAMPen Delirium II trial, which focuses on improving care for people experiencing delirium in palliative care inpatient settings.

Gillian is Deputy Module Lead for the Implementation Science module on the MSc Palliative Care programme, while additionally contributing to teaching across other modules of the programme.

Biography

Gillian received her Bachelor's degree in Human Biology at the University of Hull in 2013. She went on to attain a Master's in Translational Oncology with distinction in 2014, also at Hull. Gillian completed her PhD in Medical Sciences at Hull York Medical School. For her PhD she explored the use of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment for older cancer patients and its potential value in the treatment decision-making process

Research

Gillian is a postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre. Her main research focus is to tackle complex healthcare challenges primarily in palliative care and oncology. She has worked on various studies conducting mixed methods research including quantitative data collection/analysis, study site engagement and retention, co-design, and process evaluation through the application of implementation theory in surveys and interviews.

She previously worked as a Research Fellow on the process evaluation team as part of the CANFit study. This study is investigating a personalised exercise programmed for people at higher risk of cancer recurrence. During her time, she contributed to the development and progression of the process evaluation and is first author on the study’s process evaluation protocol, which is due to be submitted shortly.

A notable recent study was the DAMPen-Delirium study- Improving the Detection, Assessment, Management, and Prevention of Delirium in Hospices. Gillian was the Research Fellow on this 2-year feasibility study which was part of the TRANSFORM Project funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research.

The findings have directly informed the design of the main trial - DAMPen-Delirium II, a four-year NIHR funded study, for which Gillian is a co-applicant and Research Fellow lead.

More information on the DAMPen-Delirium II trial.
