Hull York Medical School is delighted to announce that Dr Chris Wilkinson, Senior Lecturer in Cardiology at Hull York Medical School and the University of York has been awarded a Cabinet Office ‘NHS Fit for the Future Mission Fellowship’ by UK Research and Innovation.

The highly competitive UKRI Cabinet Office Mission Fellowships support outstanding researchers to contribute directly to government priority missions. The ‘NHS Fit for the Future’ is one such mission and is a long-term programme which aims to reform the health and care system in the UK by supporting prevention and early intervention, improving patient experience and outcomes, enhancing the use of data and digital tools, and strengthening the workforce and service design.

Dr Wilkinson’s research explores how data-driven approaches and community centred interventions can address health inequalities and support more resilient health services. The Fellowship will enable him to work closely with the Cabinet Office, UK Government Departments, the NHS and national policy leaders to help shape the future of NHS services to strengthen prevention, improve health outcomes and ensure that services meet the needs of diverse communities.

Speaking about the award, Dr Wilkinson said:

‘I am delighted to receive this Fellowship and to have the opportunity to contribute directly to national work on the future of the NHS. I look forward to bringing evidence, data and real-world insight to the mission, and to ensuring that research helps to drive improvements for patients and communities.’

The Fellowship is just one example of how Hull York Medical School researchers are influencing policy and practice on a national level - helping to tackle major challenges facing the NHS and improving the lives of people with its community.

Professor Matthew Morgan, Dean of Hull York Medical School said:

‘This Fellowship recognises the quality and relevance of Dr Wilkinson’s research, as well as his commitment to improving health outcomes through evidence-based policy. We are delighted that he has secured this Fellowship and look forward to the impact this collaboration with the UKRI and the Cabinet Office will bring.’
