Hull York community celebrates outstanding education at this year's Clinical Teaching Excellence Awards
15 May 2025
On Wednesday 14 May, the Hull York Medical School community came together on social media to celebrate the exceptional medical education and support provided to students on the undergraduate Medicine and MSc in Physician Associate Studies programmes.
The event saw 26 winners announced across seven categories, via the Hull York Medical School Instagram, Bluesky and Facebook pages, using the hashtag #HYMSawards.
The identities of more than 140 nominees had been revealed the previous week, on the Medical School website, and also on social media.
The student-led Clinical Teaching Excellence Awards provide an opportunity for students on the Medicine and Physician Associate Studies programmes to recognise those tutors and colleagues who have gone the extra mile to support them in their studies, on clinical placement or in PBL sessions, as well as in a pastoral or extra-curricular capacity.
Presenting duties were undertaken by a mixture of Medicine and Physician Associate students, who were given the opportunity to share some of the comments about winners, submitted as part of the nominations process.
Co-Chair of the Hull York Medical School Student Staff Committee Sarah Mahmood welcomed guests on behalf of the student body. She said:
“Throughout our journey, we’ve been shaped by inspirational teachers—tutors who challenged us to do better, who believed in us when we doubted ourselves and who’ve helped us become the future doctors we’re proud to be.
“We’ve had unforgettable teaching moments [that] don’t just teach you medicine—they teach you what kind of doctor you want to become.”
Welcoming guests to the event, Dean of Hull York Medical School Professor Matt Morgan said:
“Our tutors and support colleagues don’t just deliver medical education – they deliver exceptional medical education, providing learning experiences and opportunities that will stay with our students throughout their careers. By demonstrating our School’s values, they inspire our students to achieve great things as they prepare to enter the NHS workforce.”
Medicine Programme Director Professor Lucy Ambrose said:
“What I love most about the awards is that they provide an opportunity to spotlight our partnerships with our local NHS Trusts, GP Practices and Community Service Providers, who together provide a network of exceptional teaching that our students – and their future patients – will value for many years to come.”
